June 16th is the day on which all the action in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses is set. It’s also the day on which he first went out with his future wife, Nora Barnacle. It has become a day to celebrate the work of Joyce, and for Irish people to be proud. Dublin has the main celebrations, but Irish people in other countries and places will gather today, including in Kingsthorpe cemetery where there will be readings at Lucia Joyce’s grave at 7pm tonight. I’m very sorry I can’t be there, and wish everyone who can, the very best.
